Scotland`s War Memorials
Dunbartonshire
I have a large collection of War Memorial images, both in the UK and abroad and this section is due to be revamped with memorials listed in their respective regional locations etc*
Dumbarton
Dunbartonshire, or the County of Dumbarton is a historic county, lieutenancy area and registration county in the west central Lowlands of Scotland lying to the north of the River Clyde. Prior to 1975, the county was also used for local government with its own county council, with Dumbarton as its administrative centre. Under the 1973 Local Government (Scotland) Act, the county council was abolished and administration was transferred to the newly formed Strathclyde council region. When Strathclyde was itself dissolved in 1996, the term "Dunbartonshire" resurfaced with the names of the new council areas of East Dunbartonshire and West Dunbartonshire. The boundaries of these two councils do not cover the entire area of the historic county, which also straddles Argyll & Bute and North Lanarkshire while the East Dunbartonshire council area also covers parts of the counties of Stirlingshire and Lanarkshire.
This war memorial stands on the north bank of the Clyde at the edge of Dumbarton`s Levengrove Park and bears the name of the Fallen from both World Wars. It was erected 1920 and consists of a sandstone cenotaph with a bronze winged figure looking out from the north face. The town`s crest, which features an elephant with a stone tower on its back, has been carved into the stone as has a Celtic cross. The elephant is said to represent Dumbarton Rock and the tower, Dumbarton Castle.
As Dunbartonshore covers a considerable area, the town of Dumbarton is covered here with the War Memorials in the West and East of the county viewable via the following links*
