Shipbuilding on The Clyde

I took these aerial views of Clydebank from a light aircraft in 1976. They show the John Brown`s Shipyard, even then devoid of vessels under construction, the Forth & Clyde Canal, and the sprawling Singer Factory. Part of Rothesay Dock is also visible, top left.

The famous Dumbarton shipbuilders, Denny`s was the first commercial yard to utilise a Ship Model Experimental Tank to refine the design of its hulls. Now part of the Scottish Maritime Museum, the 300ft-long tank has been restored to full working condition and is still used to test ship designs, a remarkable achievement considering the current widespread use of computer technology and the fact that the tank dates from 1882!
